Rural education and empowerment for women in Somaliland

JUNE 2023: Street Child's pilot project in Somaliland has witnessed an impressive transformation in literacy and numeracy rates among women, with participants experiencing a remarkable increase from 0 at baseline to 92.3% at endline within just a year. Moreover, the project's impact extends beyond education, as it has also contributed to a significant 42% decrease in women's willingness to subject their daughters to FGM. This recent report highlights the transformational impact that educating women and girls can have on communities and future generations. The educational intervention has proven to positively impact multiple social issues such as attitudes and understanding towards child marriage, HIV, reproductive health and financial empowerment. UKRAINE, ONE YEAR ON FROM THE RUSSIAN INVASION

FEBRUARY 2023: 'In today’s world, where we live, there is no longer "someone else’s" war,' said President Volodymyr Zelensky to the UN General Assembly in 2019. Four years later his words ring truer than ever. Russia's sustained, year-long invasion of Ukraine has resulted not only in devastating destruction, but also the displacement of more than 13.9 million Ukrainians.

Street Child launched a public fundraiser in support of Ukraine just one day after Russia escalated the war, and in the space of 12 months we’ve had an incredible impact. Our speed and agility meant we were able to quickly identify amazing local partners through our network, and within days were distributing funds in-country so that their life-saving work could continue. To date we support a network of 21 incredible local organizations across Ukraine and Moldova and have made a massive difference in the lives of more than 16,900 children and 3,200 adults, through vital child protection, education support and emergency response. FREEDOM FOR NEPAL'S MUSAHARS - STREET CHILD PROGRAMS IMPACT REPORT

JANUARY 2023: Nepal’s Musahar people are among the world’s most politically marginalized, economically exploited, and socially humiliated groups in the world. Considered ‘untouchable’ even by other Dalits - the lowest ranked caste in Nepal - they live in remote villages in the country’s south-east Terai region, and are isolated geographically and linguistically. Facing extreme prejudice from those with power and influence, Musahars are systematically excluded from education and employment, civic, legal, and health systems. Street Child and our fantastic local partners [JWAS, Aasaman and Sahas] worked with them for four years, catalyzing literacy and numeracy, income generation, and school attendance, and reducing prejudice, poverty, early marriage and child labor. AFGHANISTAN, ONE YEAR ON FROM THE FALL OF KABUL

AUGUST 2022: The fall of Kabul on August 15th, 2021 brought the biggest challenges Street Child has faced in our 25 years of operations in Afghanistan. But one year on since the Taliban's return to power, we've not only sustained our reach, but expanded it: Street Child supports 83,000+ children across our programs every day, runs 13.65% of all community-based education classes in the country, with 49% of students girls, and spent more than $4.2 million last year to make this possible. Our latest report captures the astronomical need in Afghanistan, what Street Child has been doing to address challenges in the country and looks ahead at the strategic goals to ensure our response continues to meet the need of the affected population. NON-FORMAL EDUCATION NEEDS ASSESSMENT - CAMEROON

MARCH 2021: Since 2016, ongoing violence and displacement as well as boycotts of and attacks on education have forced over 80% of schools in Cameroon’s NWSW regions to close, leaving over 855,000 children out of school. Over the past year, actors on the ground have reported a gradual opening up of space for education, and an increase in non-formal education (NFE) spaces and learning. A lack of data on NFE has made these reports difficult to verify and limits the ability of actors to develop programming to support meaningful access to quality education in areas where schools remain closed. In March 2021, Street Child of Cameroon published its findings from its recent NFE needs assessment carried out in collaboration with the NWSW Education Cluster. INNOVATION FOR LOCALIZATION

OCTOBER 2020: The impetus for advancing solutions towards local leadership, dispelling the risk narrative and as a result increasing L/NNGOs’ potential to access unrestricted institutional funding has never been greater. Despite this, research and evidence in this area is limited. In direct response to this, Save the Children Denmark, in partnership with Street Child, piloted a study in 2020 aimed at improving knowledge and the evidence base for how L/NNGOs use unrestricted funds when available.
