our model

Accelerated foundational learning

Street Child is an integrated education and child protection nonprofit that works with local-level NGOs, in communities experiencing an education crisis, to design and deliver accelerated learning programs that swiftly bring vital, lifesaving foundational learning to children whose education is disrupted or nonexistent. Our education is based on the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) methodology, which we adapted with TaRL founder Pratham to drive success for children in low-resource and humanitarian contexts.

Wrap-around social support

To make sure that learning is as impactful as possible, we provide wrap-around support in the form of child protection and livelihoods, on the basis that children who are traumatized, hungry or unsafe do not learn, and children who live in extreme poverty generally cannot access school. This part of our model won a WISE Award from the Qatar Foundation in 2019 for Innovation in Education.

Operating at the humanitarian-development nexus and working exclusively through local partners, we have over the past decade designed, delivered and adapted for context a multitude of innovative, data-driven interventions aimed at accelerating education access and quality, and fast-tracking educational outcomes, for most-marginalized groups including refugees / displaced children, children living in extreme poverty, adolescent girls, and children affected by disease, disaster and conflict.

organizational structure

We have fundraising offices in the United Kingdom, United States, Italy, Germany, Spain, France, Sweden, Switzerland and the Netherlands. All offices are legally independent, but we work closely together to fund the same programs and fill the same programmatic gaps as much as is possible. Donations made to Street Child US are disbursed directly to the field.

Sustainability

Sustainable change at scale is only possible if local solutions are mainstreamed into formal systems, so building networks of stakeholders locally, regionally and nationally and connecting solutions is a critical element of our work. We work closely with governments and ministries of education to ensure that all our accelerated learning curricula dovetail with national education priorities and curricula. Wherever possible, we work towards transitioning children into government-funded schools, so that the government rather than the community absorbs the cost of education.

localization

Our work is always delivered by a local actor with links, history, experience and trust with the target community, and based on beneficiary input. We are among very few INGOs to intentionally support the development of local NGOs to widen their reach and impact, using our influence, connections and platforms to get international funding directly into local hands, to raise awareness of these amazing, front-line organizations, and to advocate for their inclusion in decision-making sructures- in particular humanitarian response architecture, such as the UN Education and Child Protection clusters.
