Mina's story

Mina* is 7 and lives in rural Afghanistan, in a remote and dangerous area. Without anywhere to learn, she was forced to stay at home to hide away from conflict.  This all changed when one of Street Child’s local partners set up elementary school classes in her village. Mina now goes to school, in a safe space in her village.  

‘I never believed that one day my children would be able to go to school, especially my daughter,’ says Mina’s mom Aaisha*. ‘Mina is a very talented and intelligent girl. Since childhood, she wished to study and make a positive change in our life.’

Not only is Mina now learning foundational reading, writing and math skills, but she’s also learning vital social skills and building her confidence. ‘Instead of sitting at home alone, I now study here with my peers,’ she says. ‘They give me love, and I feel strong. I am hopeful about my education, but sometimes I think about other children of this community who do not have a school to study in.’ 

Mina now wants to change the story for Afghan girls, and hopes one day to become a teacher to inspire girls just like her. Your help today will support girls like Mina, who are fighting for their right to education and a better life.
